OSOTD: Matthew Mitcham (Diving - Australia)

Yay for Matthew Mitcham! Not only did he win gold in the Men's 10M Platform event and prevent a Chinese sweep of the diving medals, he was EW's final Olympic Stud of the Day for his "solid, focused dives and OVERWHELMING ADORABLENESS"!!!

Awww...

Below is a video of all six of Matthew Mitcham's dives in the 10M platform finals, followed by a Lot of hugs, the medal ceremony (the Australian Anthem lyrics can be found below), and a visit to the stands:

I didn't even realize that he's gay until afterwards when I doing some "research". And Mitcham was one of ten openly-gay athletes at the Games (according to outsports.com).

Here's the video of a press interview with Matthew Mitcham after the event. He's there with his mom (who is just like an Aussie version of Debbie Phelps) and his partner Lachlan:

There's some in the GLBT who were disappointed/outraged that NBC didn't mention his sexual orientation (and here's a link to NBC's lame response). Anyways, even though a great opportunity to further "humanize" gays was not taken, what Matthew did in being EW's final Olympic Stud of the Day beating the Chinese divers was amazing.

Plus he's INCREDIBLY ADORABLE!

Congratulations Matthew!!!

ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR
by 'Amicus' (Peter Dodds McCormick)
(History of: http://www.dfat.gov.au/facts/nat_anthem.html)

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

(second verse)
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
